Los Feliz, Los Angeles

Where Griffith Park begins.

Los Feliz is one of the few corners of Los Angeles you can enjoy on foot: tree-lined streets, old cinemas, the hills right behind you. Here is how we spend a free day.

Close by

Our short list of favourite places.

Times are from the front door, outside rush hour. Bikes are free at the desk.

  • Griffith Observatory10 min by car

Go an hour before sunset, park at the bottom and walk up the last stretch. The view over the basin is the reason people move here.

  • Barnsdall Art Park6 min by bike

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House sits on the hill. The lawn is the best free picnic spot on the east side.

  • Vermont & Hillhurst4 min by bike

Two short streets of bookshops, wine bars, a cinema and tacos. Most of our dinner recommendations are here.

  • Silver Lake Reservoir8 min by car

A flat 2.2-mile loop with dog walkers and joggers. Good for an early walk before breakfast.

  • Hollywood Bowl15 min by car

Summer concerts under the hills. Bring a picnic; we will pack one for you with 24 hours' notice.

  • Santa Monica beach45 min by car

When you want the Pacific. Leave before 10 am or after 7 pm to miss the worst of the traffic.

Getting around

Bikes, the B Line, and a car when you need one.

Six house bikes cover the neighbourhood. The Vermont/Sunset Metro station is a twelve-minute walk, with trains to Hollywood and downtown. For the beach or the airport, the desk can book a driver.

  • Burbank airport: about 20 minutes. LAX: about 45 minutes
  • Downtown LA: 15 minutes. Santa Monica: 45 minutes
